We have an opportunity for a highly skilled, motivated, and charismatic Leader to join our team as the Director, Human Resources. This important role reports directly to the Vice President, Human Resources and offers an abundance of opportunity to lead our Learning and Development Team and our HR Business Partners.

Position Summary:

The Director, Human Resources is responsible for leading Talent Management programs aimed at attracting, retaining, and promoting Associates, while also ensuring their engagement and performance. They also provide HR support in all core HR fundamentals to the senior leadership team of the Canadian business within our retail operations and in the corporate office.

Main Responsibilities:

Corporate Culture: Collaborate with the HR Team to foster and maintain our connected corporate culture at H&R Block – We Care, We Trust, We Connect.

Human Resources Strategy: Assist in developing and implementing our comprehensive HR strategy. Collaborate closely with the senior leadership team to create programs aligned to further enhance and execute our business objectives.

Training: Drive training strategies for all Associates, within our Retail environment and Corporate office. Encompassing best practices, content, and agile/just-in-time delivery strategies.

DEIB: Continuously enhance HRB Canada's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Talent Management: Collaborate with business leaders to evaluate, cultivate, maintain, and acquire the necessary talent to meet the organization's needs. Provide guidance and coaching to both Managers and Associates on performance management initiatives, goal setting, continuous performance feedback, and career development planning.

Succession Planning: Lead, coach, and support the team to provide growth opportunities for high-potential individual contributors and people leaders. Implement succession plans to ensure a smooth transition in key roles.

Alignment and Compliance: Establish and implement a consistent approach to employment records to ensure compliance with labor laws. Develop HR programs and policies that comply with all Canadian employment standards.

Legal matters: Lead or assist with complaint resolution (mediations, tribunals, etc.) in all provinces.

Recruitment and Retention: Develop exceptional sourcing, recruitment, recognition, onboarding, and retention strategies for corporate office Associates and Tax Professionals to ensure outstanding customer experience at H&R Block.

Communication: Establish effective communication channels from the HR department to the entire organization, ensuring consistent and transparent messaging.

Key Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field in Human Resources, Adult Education or a similar discipline and a minimum of 15 years of experience in various HR areas, with at least 10 years in people management and agile learning delivery, or a relevant combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing HR strategies that align with strategic business needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the company in legal matters (mediation, tribunals), specifically in Quebec and Ontario.
  • Excellent English and French verbal and written communications skills.
  • Possesses strong personal leadership qualities and demonstrates a solid understanding of business operations.
  • Forward-thinking mindset and the ability to positively influence and drive organizational change.
  • Capable of partnering with and influencing senior leaders, as well as building relationships with Associates at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Committed to delivering excellent HR services and operational excellence.
  • Detail-oriented and fact-driven, with the ability to identify efficiencies and build a strong case for and support business initiatives and excellence in leading or assisting with change management in the execution of new initiatives.
