The Opportunity:

Do you want to help change the experience of Digital tax preparation software and services? Do you want to be involved in designing the software that will be used nationally across our chain of retail offices as well as individual Canadians? If you love to solve puzzles and are excited about designing software solutions that impact millions of taxpayers and improve overall customer experiences, then a Tax Compliance and Accuracy Team role is for you!

If you are a tax expert, but also passionate about software development, or financial software systems this might be the perfect role for you. We are a team of tax enthusiasts and problem solvers who specialize in building, testing and certifying two separate tax software. We are looking for a strong Lead to join our team. This person would be responsible for enforcing the accuracy of the software, and ensuring we remain in compliance with both the income tax act, and the specified government regulations for tax software. You must play well with others. As a Lead you will collaborate with multiple internal teams of varying technical knowledge, and you will provide support and tax expertise to other members of the tax team.

Reporting to the Manager, Tax Development, you will be part of a collaborative, agile team responsible for the end-to-end design, development, implementation, maintenance, compliance and accuracy of the tax software.

You will lead collaboration with all stakeholders for the tax software including Products & Services, Architecture, UI/UX, Tax Professionals and other business stakeholders. Your contributions in this role will pave the path forward and shape the future of H&R Block’s Tax Software and business strategy.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Act as Canadian Tax subject matter expert for Product Managers, Business Analysts, Developers, Content Writers, and User Experience Specialists.
  • Deep understanding of personal taxation and ability to interpret tax law and research complex tax scenarios and translate complex technical concepts into non-technical language for consumption by stakeholders.
  • Assist with workload management of ad hoc requests and delegation of business requests to ensure timely completion of all deliverables and contribute to work effort estimates.
  • Audit software application for validity of results, accuracy, reliability, and compliance with Canadian Federal and Provincial tax regulations (including Quebec).
  • Triage software defects, and support and co-ordinate with developers and tax programmer analysts across Canada and Offshore to fix issues and implement improvements.
  • Work with the Tax Platform developers to ensure scalability and performance improvements of new and existing features.
  • Establish, promote, review, and refine coding standards within the team.
  • Support, coach, and mentor fellow Tax Platform team members.
  • Collaborate with user-experience designers, technical writers, business domain experts, database administrators and quality assurance to build new products and features which will help take our business to the next level.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to scope project deliverables, dependencies, and timelines.
  • Collaborate with DevOps and Microservices to advocate for and lead the resolution of outstanding technical debt.

Key Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • Three years of tax experience in the tax preparation industry.
  • Three years’ experience with tax compliance, regulatory, and certification processes.
  • Experience preparing a variety of Federal and Provincial tax returns (e.g., student, pension, self-employed, rental property, investments, foreign income, etc.).
  • Completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax Course or similar education program is a strong asset.
  • Have experience with software programming, testing, or IT integrations (e.g., integration of a new financial reporting system and validation of data transfer).
  • Experience with Agile/SCRUM and IT project management is an asset.
  • Experience with JAVA-based technologies an asset.
  • Experience with one of JIRA or Azure DevOps is an asset.
  • Ability to interpret tax law and research complex tax scenarios, then translate into non-technical terms.
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative, and agile team environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency or bilingual in French is an asset.
